     Dear Parents,

I would like to welcome your child to the first grade. I am pleased and excited to have the opportunity to instruct your child this year. I hope to make your student’s learning experience very positive and special. I will try to the best of my ability to ensure your child reaches the goals both you and I have for learning in this important first grade year.

I would like to tell you a little about myself. My name is Diana Vermaas. I attended school in Blue Springs from kindergarten through high school  graduation. I have a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology from central Missouri State University, with an emphasis in child and adolescent psychology. I have been involved in education at Butler Elementary for 20 years. The first year I was a teacher's assistant in preschool and kindergarten. I worked six years in special education with children with various disabilities. I was also involved in teaching students and assisting teachers for five years in technology.  I received my Master’s in Elementary Education in 2007. The last eight years I have spent teaching first graders. My education and experience will assist me in understanding student behavior, addressing the special needs of various students, and incorporating technology into my lesson plans.

Despite my qualifications, I still need a very important partner in teaching your child, and that partner is you. I realize that you are the first authority on knowing your child’s strengths, weaknesses, hobbies, and interests. I would therefore greatly appreciate any assistance you may be able to give me this year in making your child’s learning experience a successful one.

I have plan time from 1:10 to 1:50. I am usually at the school till 6:30 PM. I would welcome phone calls or visits at either time. If visiting please go to the office for a visitors pass. Our classroom is in the new elementary wing. We are upstairs on the north side and at the western end of the hallway.  Our room is number 240. The phone number of our classroom is 679-6591(ext 118).  This number usually goes to an answering machine which may not give me the message in a timely manner. If it is an emergency, such as a change in who is to pick up your child that day, please call the office at 679-6591. My email address is . I want you to feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns, or comments. Please do restrict phone calls to my plan time or after school unless it is an emergency. I will also be sending home weekly newsletters to help keep you informed as to weekly reading and writing themes, spelling lists,  weekly math lessons, particular projects, special events, field trips, and other items of interest.

My 1st grade curriculum is based on state mandated objectives of the Missouri Core Curriculum Standards, and I follow the grade level expectations devised for this.  Please remember that children are our greatest natural resource and your child’s success in school is homemade.
